The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star
|
|
Information
One of new waves most charming singles, the Buggles prescient 1979 hit "Video Killed the Radio Star" is also one of the most knowing and ironic: A pop song about pop itself, it celebrates the golden days of radio with shiny, futuristic synths and then-contemporary studio techniques. The irony was complete when the songs video became the first clip aired on MTV. Fortunately, "Video Killed the Radio Star"s ironies — intentional or otherwise — work in the songs favor. With its broadcast-quality vocals and bouncy rhythm, the song plays like an extended jingle, delivering hooks and sonic flourishes at every turn, appropriately enough for the story of a singer made obsolete by TV. The breathy, girlish backup singers, twinkly synths, and other intricate layers in "Video Killed the Radio Star"s arrangement and production also foreshadow Trevor Horns evolution into a first-rate producer. Subsequent covers, most notably by the Presidents of the United States of America, removed the songs poignancy and focused on its novelty appeal. But just as the song looks back on the radio songs of the 50s and 60s, now "Video Killed the Radio Star" can be looked on as a perfectly preserved new wave gem. It still sounds as immediate as it did when it was released, however, and that may be the songs greatest irony.
Lyric
I heard you on the wireless back in Fifty Two
Lying awake intent at tuning in on you.
If I was young it didnt stop you coming through.
Oh-a oh
They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the problems you can see.
Oh-a oh
I met your children
Oh-a oh
What did you tell them?
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
Pictures came and broke your heart.
Oh-a-a-a oh
And now we meet in an abandoned studio.
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago.
And you remember the jingles used to go.
Oh-a oh
You were the first one.
Oh-a oh
You were the last one.
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
In my mind and in my car, we cant rewind weve gone to far
Oh-a-aho oh,
Oh-a-aho oh
Video killed the radio star.
Video killed the radio star.
In my mind and in my car, we cant rewind weve gone to far.
Pictures came and broke your heart, put the blame on VTR.

Video Killed the Radio Star by The Wrong Trousers
|
|
The Wrong Trousers can be found at http://myspace.com/thewrongtrousers
I was roaming Balboa Park before a wedding and this three piece band caught my attention. A small boy with an upright bass, a bespectacled giant with a mandolin, and an unassuming girl with a harp. They call themselves The Wrong Trousers. Talk about odd choices in musical instruments. But they have tremendous talent. Their style wont be everyones cup of tea, but theres no denying they know their instruments and are comppletely unique. These kids are still in high school! A good size crowd had formed and they were getting lots of cash donations.

Classic New Wave Music Video by the Buggles
Video Killed the Radio Star" is a 1980s New Wave song (released in 1979) by the British group Buggles that celebrates the golden days of radio. With broadcast-quality vocals and a bouncy rhythm, the song plays like a jingle. A fitting sound, given the song tells of a singer whose career is cut short by television. Horn has said his lyrics were inspired by the J.G. Ballard short story "The Sound-Sweep," in which the title character, a deaf and dumb boy vacuuming up stray music in a world without it, comes upon an opera singer hiding in a sewer. He also felt "an era was about to pass."

Theremin Killed the Radio Star (take 2)
|
|
"Video Killed The Radio Star" played on the theremin by Jon Bernhardt at his house in Massachusetts, on June 10, 2006. Why another version? Jon was asked to contribute to a TV show being developed by Vh1, and they wanted to include an intro explaining what a theremin is (hence the first 100 seconds of this clip). Jon and fellow Lothars member Dean Stiglitz shot it in one take.

Yeah, I said I wasnt going to make another video until I got my new camera, but I lied. The creativity was bubbling up and I had to do a little sumpthin-sumpthin.
PS: every time you see me look off camera, Im looking at my computer, at the lyrics. I didnt know them all too well. XD Hope it came across good anyway.

Random nostalgia - Video Killed The Radio Star
|
|
Yes, let us go back to a simpler time, a time with great TV and film, before the 1990s came and spoiled everything. :)
Using whatever DVDs I had of stuff from the 70s and 80s, I edited this together for the hell of it. And I used The Presidents of the United States of America cover version because, well, the original is from the 70s/80s fringe, looking back on a time earlier than that. The cover version seems more suited to now looking back on the 70s/80s.
Clips are from:
Doctor Who
The Young Ones
The Exorcist
Garfield and Friends
Fritz the Cat
UFO
Pretty in Pink
The Electric Company
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Shock Treatment
I was gonna include Sesame Street, Monty Python, and The Care Bears, but I ran out of room. :P Sorry.
All clips belong to their respective copyright holders, and so does the music.

Star Wars Allies
|
|
I edited this together shortly after "The Phantom Menace" came out on tape, although the video had been playing in my mind ever since "Return of the Jedi" premiered the year after Heart performed the song "Allies" on their album "Passionworks."
I was finally able to bring my dream video into reality (with a bit of bonus footage!) as a project for broadcasting school in 1999. A little later, I added a prologue featuring soundtrack from the radio edition of "Return of the Jedi."
The video is meant to show what may have been running through the minds of our heroes on the eve and the day of their final great battle.
I have shown it around at various conventions and many people loved it. I hope you enjoy it as well.
VOICE CAST FROM THE NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO SERIES "STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI":
Luke Skywalker: Joshua Fardon
Princess Leia: Ann Sachs
Han Solo: Perry King
See-Threepio: who else but Anthony Daniels
and
Assorted Ewoks
P.S.: I only found out a few years after Id put this all together that the pilot sitting next to Luke at the Death Star briefing isnt, as most people think, Wedge Antilles, but one John D. So lets just say that Wedge was sitting on the opposite side of Luke and had the bad fortune to be offscreen.
Yeah, thats the ticket....

Torino 2006 Opening Ceremony - Parade of the Athletes (1/6)
|
|
The national teams entered underneath the five-ring structure in the traditional Parade of Nations. Like with all Olympic games, the first team to emerge was Greece, since it was the site of the Games of the I Olympiad, and the host nation Italy entered last. The rest of the nations entered following the alphabetical order according to the spelling of the country in Italian, the language of the host country. The atelier Moschino designed the clothes of the women bearing the placards with team names for the athletes parade. The dresses were shaped as snowy mountain tops, complete with pine trees and small houses lit up by embedded lights. Miss Italia, Edelfa Chiara Masciotta, was carrying the placard for team Italy who wore a special dress designed to pay tribute to Turin.
The march of the Olympic teams was accompanied by a selection of 1970s and 1980s American and European disco music, including "Video Killed the Radio Star," "YMCA" by the Village People, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor, "Daddy Cool" by Boney M and songs by the Doobie Brothers and Eurythmics.

THE JESTERS - 01/11/1934
|
|
THE JESTERS
Duration: 03 mins 54 secs
Black & White with Sound
American comic trio The Jesters impersonate famous US radio singing stars.
Titles read: "NOW Pathe Pictorial has pleasure in presenting - THE JESTERS - The famous American Comedy Team in their burlesque of American Broadcasting".
Pathe Studio, London.
Various shots of The Jesters, three men in white tie and tails, standing around a microphone with a grand piano in the background. They introduce some popular American radio stars and impersonate singers Bing Crosby, Morton Downeys little brother, Upsidedowney, Russ Columbo, Katy Smith, Scram Sam (?) and Arthur Tracy. They make much of the different sponsors of each star - its quite funny.
They finally do a good impression of the Mills Brothers singing a fast version of "Ill Be Glad When Youre Dead You Rascal You".
Note: snatches of songs heard in the impressions are When The Blue of the Night, Carolina Moon, You Call It Madness, When The Moon Comes Over The Mountains and Marta.
